Gardening & Horticulture

Hands-on with plants

Garden Growers
Volunteers staff our Garden Growers Nursery seven days a week and assist in all phases of propagation, plant care, and staging plants for retail sales. Garden Growers help visitors find specific plants for their home gardens and answer questions about plant care and growing techniques. An eight-week training program is offered every two years, and on-the-job training is provided in between. Read a history of the Garden Growers here

Volunteer Gardener Crews
Join a gardening crew and work alongside our knowledgeable gardeners.

  • Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9am to noon.

The Garden has 78 acres of grounds to be tended, trails to be maintained, and special collection displays to be cared for in a variety of habitats. Our staff gardeners can always use help in meeting the challenge of nature versus nurture. Join this growing group of dedicated volunteers who enjoy working directly on the displays and trails. Our volunteer gardening crews tackle weeds, prune bushes, mulch, rake and support our mission of conserving Californias native plants.

Horticulture

Our "Hort Unit" provides opportunities to learn about propagation of native plants and with the seed bank, both of which contribute to the Garden’s work in plant conservation and maintaining the Garden’s exhibits. Plants grown here are meant for the Garden grounds, grown for specific exhibit areas, and tracked with a database and tagging system. Volunteers can choose a weekday shift.

The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden fosters the conservation of California's native plants through
our gardens, research and education, and serves as a role model of sustainable practices.
