Burton Mesa Day Trip at the La Purisima Mission

Enjoy springtime blooms at Burton Mesa Preserve with Steve Junak, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden’s Herbarium Curator emeritus. At least 25 special-status plant species are found on the ancient stabilized sand dunes of Burton Mesa, the La Purisima Mission lands, and surrounding areas. Participants will explore a unique sandhill chaparral community dominated by giant La Purisima manzanitas and walk through open sandy areas with spring flowers. Seasonal highlights include Ceanothus in bloom, prickly phlox, early monkeyflowers, and vernal pools.
