Mariposa lilies are one of California’s most popular native plants. They are easy to recognize and such a delight to find, are quite showy for California’s often subdued landscapes, and come in a stunning variety of hues. All mariposa lilies belong to the genus Calochortus, which includes about 70 species in western North America, ranging from British Columbia south to Guatemala. However, California is the center of diversity for this genus. And Southern California alone boasts 15 different species that are live in many different ecosystems including mountains, foothills, and coastal regions. Join us as Fred Roberts gives us a tour of these beautiful bulbs that range from the white globe-shaped white fairy lantern (C. albus); the reds, whites, and yellows of butterfly mariposa lily (C. venustus); the brilliant orange of desert mariposa (C. kennedyi); and the straw-colored late-flowering mariposa lily (C. fimbriatus).
