Americans spend 93% of our time indoors. 80% of us now live in cities, versus 50% 100 years ago, and just 5% 100 years before that. We've been boxing nature out, and it's making us sick. But 60% of all cancers and 80% of all heart disease is preventable by making healthy choices about how we live, and a major component in those lifestyle choices is time spent outside. We can use nature as medicine by learning the science of nature therapy and gaining insight from those who have succeeded in controlling their symptoms and conditions with a specific nature experience.

Other countries are already ahead of us on this. Japan has 62 official healing forests. Korea plans to establish 42 national and public healing forests and 2 national forest healing centers forest rangers by the end of 2020. There are 700 care farms in Northern Europe (though in the U.S, under 20). Nurseries have had to hire extra garden staff all though the Spring to keep up with the new interest in home gardening. The good news is that Americans have, as nearby as a windowsill and as close as the park down the street, a new way to use nature to heal what ails them.
