California's native plants offer nearly limitless uses in your residential garden, from creating wildlife-attracting, naturalistic landscapes to cottage, contemporary or traditional style spaces. This class takes students through the steps professional designers use to assure that the finished garden is beautiful, useful and sustainable: site planning to enhance outdoor living, selecting plants based on what they “do” in the garden as well as how to create beautiful, year-round interest. Learn the “core of four” step-by-step plant selection technique to sort through the sometimes overwhelming choices available at the spring plant sale and bring home plants that will serve you for years to come. The class ends with a tour of some of the Garden’s most beautiful beds to bring the classroom concepts life. There will be a book signing of his garden design book, "Yards: Turn Any Outdoor Space Into the Garden of Your Dreams", St. Lynn's Press, 2013

He continues to provide customized residential design coaching in the greater Santa Barbara area and was the winner of 2005 Santa Barbara Beautiful Awards for both residential and park projects, and awards from both the California State Architects Office and the American Society of Landscape Architects.

He has taught locally at Santa Barbara City College, Master Gardeners and adult education, also traveling the country speaking at botanic gardens and garden shows. His writing has been featured in Garden Design, Sunset, Fine Gardening and 805 Living magazines and his TV show “Garden Wise Guys” was a popular, educational show on local TV for 5 years.

As an award-winning designer who worked his way up from swinging a pick to landscape architect, his presentations are enriched by years of professional design practice and animated by his earlier life as an entertainer. “That was too much fun,” is a typical response to Billy’s presentations and workshops. So is, “I thought there’d be a two-drink cover charge for the entertainment…and I learned a lot.”
