Builders are putting the finishing touches on playhouses designed for an exhibit at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. Garden Casitas: Playhouses Designed with Nature in Mind is a juried exhibition featuring playhouses designed by local architects, design-build firms, students and volunteers. The display runs July 1-Dec. 31 at 1212 Mission Canyon Road.

“Garden Casitas is a fun way for visitors of all ages to spend more time outdoors and connect with nature from a different perspective,” said Steve Windhager, executive director at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. “We think this exhibition will encourage more exploration of the garden and opportunities for families to engage with the natural world.”

Each playhouse design is inspired by nature; the designs range from an “above ground hobbit hole,” to a California poppy-inspired structure made of redwood, to one made with shingles from a felled tree burned in the Thomas Fire.
