SBBG Plant Databases
California County Flora Database-CACO©
Through cooperation with the USDA National Plant Data Center (www.plants.usda.gov), the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden developed and manages CACO, the California County Flora Database. CACO relies on scientific literature as a source of distribution records for each of California's 58 counties. Currently, CACO includes over 90,000 records of taxa, based on over 1,300 publications, and is updated regularly. Please contact Dieter Wilken for further information on accessibility.
Central California Coast Database-CENCO©
The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is developing a database of plant distribution records for the Central Coast Bioregion, including Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, western Kern, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties. The database includes records based on specimens from other herbaria, and on verifiable observations published in scientific literature. CENCO currently includes over 10,000 records that are independent of the SBBG herbarium database. CENCO is not yet available via the internet. Please contact Dieter Wilken for accessibility.
Jepson Interchange
Data from over 40,000 of the vascular plant specimens found in the Garden's herbarium are accessible through a cooperative effort with the Jepson Herbarium at UC Berkeley. Follow instructions for searching the database. Specimens with "SBBG" preceding the "accession id" are housed at the Garden.
Southwestern Natural History Database
Information on the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden's lichen collections, including records for over 23,000 specimens, is available through the Southwestern Natural History Database website managed by Arizona State University. When using the Southwestern Natural History Database page, check "SBBG Lichen Collection" to examine the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden's holdings for particular species.
