Herb Parker’s Labyrinth: Haven at Santa Barbara Botanic Garden May 2010 - 2011
Santa Barbara, CA – International artist Herb Parker’s beautiful environmental sculpture will continue to grace the meadow of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden until May 2011.
Mr. Parker was in residency at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden for a three-week period in May 2009 to construct a large-scale temporary environmental sculpture. Titled Labyrinth: Haven, Mr. Parker’s work rises from the Meadow in a gentle flow of California native plant magnificence. Flower-draped paths invite visitors to explore the vast, intriguing interior laced with every-changing patterns of light. Exploring the intricate maze is a sensory and aesthetic experience culminating in the discovery of a splendid center courtyard complete with stone seating where strangers can meet and share the delights of this journey.
“My nature-based installations are created to enhance a viewer’s perception of the environment and our relationship with nature,” Mr. Parker says of his work. Parker’s dramatic sculptures are molded from natural materials including sod, wood, and stone to create provocative works that reflect painter Marc Chagall’s belief that “Great art picks up where nature ends.”
