Drs. Peter Wyse Jackson and J. Robert Haller
Receive The Honorable John C. Pritzlaff Plant Conservation Award
Santa Barbara, CA – The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is pleased to present the 4th Annual The Honorable John C. Pritzlaff Plant Conservation Award to two eminent individuals: Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson, Director of the National Botanic Gardens of Ireland and Dr. J. Robert Haller, UCSB Professor of Botany, Emeritus, and Santa Barbara Botanic Garden Botanist.
Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson has devoted his entire career to establishing or developing botanic gardens throughout the world and to promoting their work in plant conservation. He helped establish the Botanic Gardens Conservation International in 1987 and was its Secretary General for eleven years. In addition to his ten books and over 200 scientific papers, Dr. Wyse Jackson was the lead author of International Agenda for Botanic Gardens in Conservation, a document endorsed by over 500 botanic gardens world-wide. Through his efforts, the U. N. Convention on Biological Diversity adopted the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation in 2002, and Dr. Wyse Jackson now serves as the Chairman of the Global Partnership for Plant Conservation to help implement this strategy. As Director of the National Botanic Gardens of Ireland, Dr. Wyse Jackson is developing policies and practices on biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability for the institution.
Revered throughout California for his decades of botanical instruction, Dr. J. Robert (Bob) Haller’s passion for plants has touched thousands of students and launched dozens of careers in the life sciences. His lectures, punctuated by fabulous photos of flora accompanied by popular music of the day, were as exciting and inspiring as his legendary forays into the field. His students developed a life-long appreciation for the incredible diversity of California flora and a deep understanding of the importance of plants to all life and the need to conserve this amazing natural resource. While a professor at UCSB, Dr. Haller was instrumental in helping to establish the acclaimed University of California Natural Reserve System that now protects approximately 130,000 acres of land in the state that is used for educational and research purposes. His influence is felt throughout California and beyond as those he taught and inspired continue to do the important work of plant conservation.
“We are deeply honored that both Dr. Wyse Jackson and Dr. Bob Haller have accepted The Honorable John C. Pritzlaff Plant Conservation Award,” said Garden President and CEO Dr. Edward Schneider. “The value of their work in plant conservation is incalculable. Both are true leaders in the field and exemplify all that in which John Pritzlaff believed and devoted his life to achieve.”
A life-long servant and champion of the environment, The Honorable John C. Pritzlaff was a Botanic Garden trustee from 1991–2003. His political, personal, and volunteer activities speak clearly to his love of the environment and his desire to ensure that our greatest treasure — our natural environment — remains healthy for future generations. The Honorable John C. Pritzlaff Plant Conservation Award was established to honor Mr. Pritzlaff’s commitment to conservation and serves to inspire others to understand its importance.
The presentation will take place at the Botanic Garden’s 7th Annual Orchid Show Dinner, held amidst the exquisite setting of the Santa Barbara International Orchid Show at Earl Warren Showgrounds on March 13, 2010.
