Help Us Rebuild the Historic Campbell Bridge!

The historic Campbell Bridge that once spanned Mission Creek burned to the ground in the disastrous Jesusita Fire two years ago. The original bridge was built in 1941 thanks to a generous gift from Ina Therese Campbell who wanted our entire community of visitors to be able to explore the Botanic Garden - even those who could not make the creek crossing over boulders. Designed by Lockwood de Forest, Jr., the bridge represented the rustic character that has made the Garden famous and led the County of Santa Barbara to designate it as part of the Garden’s historic landmark.

When the bridge burned in 2009, the Garden was in the midst of public controversy over its proposed building plan.  Today, with the final plan approved, rebuilding the bridge has taken on a meaning well beyond improving our pedestrian traffic flow!  We see its absence as a physical expression of the rift that occurred between the Garden, our volunteers, and the larger community.  A rift we sincerely wish to mend.

The Garden hopes to have a large number of people support the project because it is very much about getting the Santa Barbara community active and engaged with the Garden again. We estimate it will cost $80,000 to rebuild the bridge and hope to have the money raised by March 17th, 2012.  Our strong intention is to have the new bridge in place by the end of 2012!  A donation of any amount is gratefully appreciated.
