Current Research at SBBG

Current research by Garden staff includes floristic surveys of the Channel Islands, reproductive syndromes of endangered species, utilization of California native trees in urban forestry, and mechanisms of control of an invasive grass.

Garden research and conservation efforts focus on California’s central coast region, from Monterey south to Ventura counties, including the California Channel Islands.

SBBG Research Associates

The Garden's Research Associate program dates back to the 1940s. It was established to further the research interests of SBBG, and capture opportunities for collaboration with professionals at other institutions. Over the years, collaborators have included faculty at UC Santa Barbara and UC Berkeley. Research Associates study topics as varied as lichens of California, evolution of angiosperms, and genetics of California pines.
